When selecting a diamond, you’ll want to take into account the “4 Cs:” cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. All four of these factors determine the quality and cost of the diamond.
CUT
Cut doesn’t refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the angles and proportions of the stone.
While nature determines the other three Cs, the diamond’s cut is determined by a cutter.
A well-cut diamond reflects light from one facet to another and projects the light through the top of the stone.
This is what gives a diamond its sparkle. This is why Thomas Wood Jewellers in Bury only sell stones with a very good or excellent cut grade.
Out of all the four Cs, cut is the most important. Even if you have the perfect colour, clarity, and carat, if the cut isn’t right, the diamond won’t have that fiery brilliance for your fiancée to show off to her friends.
COLOUR
You might be surprised to hear that diamonds come in a variety of colours.
Diamond colour is graded on a scale that ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow).
Truly colourless diamonds are the rarest and most expensive. White colour diamonds are the most popular.
But, when it gets down to it, diamond colour is all about preference. We recommend an F/G colour. We will always show you the difference between the colours when you are buying a diamond from us.
CLARITY
The fewer imperfections a diamond has, the clearer, and consequently, more expensive it is. We at Thomas Wood Jewellers in Bury will discuss the clarity of the diamond and explain about “inclusions” which refers to other minerals or tiny fractures in the diamond. The fewer inclusions the better.
Like colour, clarity is measured on a scale and we will always explain the different clarities, so you understand the difference and know exactly what you’re purchasing.
We usually recommend a clarity of SI1 or SI2 (“SI” stands for “slightly included”). At these ratings, the inclusions are so minute that you won’t be able to see the imperfections with the naked eye.
CARAT WEIGHT
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond.
The higher the weight, the more the diamond is likely to cost.
Carat doesn’t necessarily impact the size of the diamond and many people are pleasantly surprised to find bigger diamonds that weigh slightly less.
